FIT WITH THE ROD DOWNWARDS — stated expressly on the manufacturer's drawing («must be mounted with piston rod down») and repeated by the manufacturer, which adds a minimum tilt of 15°. That is what keeps the seal lubricated; fitted the other way up it loses force and fails early.
